We all had a bad day at work. But when you have one bad day after another and find yourself angry, tired, and constantly overwhelmed quickly, you can burn out at work. You’re not alone.
A gallop survey showed that 76% of employees sometimes feel burned out and 28% suffer “very often” or “always” from burnout at work.
Whether or not your boss is willing to accept this, burnout at work is one thing and there are clear signs of burnout Upward trend.
What is work burnout?
According to the World Health Organization (WHO)Burnout is a syndrome that results from unmanaged chronic stress in the workplace.
Throw in a pandemic and it gets worse. The pressure is on. As key employees work overtime and more people work from home, the “always on” work culture is fully effective, causing work-related stress, anxiety, and cynicism.
There are many different causes of work burnout. Here are a few:
- Unclear work expectations
- Lack of control over your schedule or workload
- Stressful workplace dynamics
- Bad work-life balance
- To work too much
Signs and Symptoms of Burnout at Work
Burnout at work is characterized by exhaustion, negativity, or cynicism about your job and a general feeling of lack of performance. But it’s not always obvious. Burnout can creep in on us and manifest itself in different ways for different people. Here are some of the most common signs of burnout at work.
- Your performance is going downhill. Probably because your care and your efforts are spinning with your performance.
- You feel exhausted all the time. It doesn’t matter how much sleep you get or how much coffee you drink, you just can’t cheer yourself up. E.Exhaustion can be caused by a number of things such as depression, poor diet, sedentary lifestyle, poor sleep patterns, or physical illness. Feeling tired isn’t always burnout, but if you experience prolonged stress at work it can be.
- They struggle to be happy about something. When people are overworked, passion goes out the window. If you couldn’t care less about the things you once enjoyed … work burnout.
- You don’t bother anymore. Failure to feel excited about anything can lead to a serious case of apathy. You can still get the job done, but the bare minimum is all you have the energy to do.
- You have become more cynical or critical at work. While complaining every now and then is therapeutic, cynicism and negativity are common signs of burnout at work.
Short and long term fixes for burnout at work
If this option is not checked, burnout can increase quickly. Even if you take a break from work, you only return to the source of the burnout afterward.
You may not be able to cure burnout today, but you can take steps to reduce the stress while you work on these long term solutions.
Short term solutions
1. Reach out to others
One way to combat burnout is to seek support from others, e.g. B. from family members, friends or even colleagues. If your job has an employee utility running, check it out. If the source of your stress is in workplace processes, working with management on solutions is one way to resolve it.
2. Embrace healthy habits
While it doesn’t address the root cause of burnout, learning how to deal with stress is so important to stay healthy. There are many different activities and habits that you can begin dealing with stress. There is exercise, spending time in nature, getting enough sleep, yoga, meditation. Anything that gets your head out of your day-to-day work is great. But let’s go beyond that …
3. Address the fear today
A major cause of burnout is an underlying fear that bubbles under the surface and pops your ugly head out when the going gets tough. Do you feel overwhelmed and anxious? Admitting this is a great first start, but what are you going to do about it?
Ramit’s approach to fear it’s about knowing when to let go of things. It’s also about not waiting for inspiration to strike or “being in a better / more productive mood” to address your problems.
Instead, it’s about taking real action and building systems to deal with fear. You probably already know what to do. But just focus on one or two things and practice them daily. However, you choose to fight anxiety and stick to it. Do it on the bad days too, no especially on the bad days.
Long term solutions
The problem with short-term solutions is that often they don’t really work to solve the basic problem. It just mends a hole in a sinking ship. Temporary relief is great, but to really treat burnout, long-term solutions are in order. When you’re burned out at work, your really only two options: improve your current job, or find a new one.
Option 1: improve your current job
Some ways that you can alleviate burnout and improve your job are:

- Negotiate for perks – If the compatibility of work and family is the problem, negotiating more vacation time, remote work or flexible working hours can help with burnout.
- Ask for a transfer – If you can change your job role or even move to a different department, this can ease the burnout due to a lack of job satisfaction.
Option 2: Find a new job
If the above isn’t working, or your boss isn’t working with you, it may be time to move on and make a career change. We know scary stuff! But it’s ultimately worth it if you can’t find happiness where you are now.
Don’t just move on to another job right now without careful thought. If things don’t work out in your current job, this is a great learning experience. What went wrong?
