Meet Spencer Haws from NichePursuits.com
In the world of blogging, many people have made a name for themselves by blogging about it which they are good at.
For Spencer Haws, he’s a master at building niche websites. Not only has he found success in niche marketing but has not only become a well known blogger but also released great software that many of us use as well.
All of this combined makes Spencer perfect for this week’s Meet the Bloggers interview.
1.) Please tell us something about yourself and how you got into blogging.
I started blogging about 3 years ago. At that time I was still working as a full-time banker in the corporate world.
However, I had also had some success with one of my side businesses; Building niche websites. So I started blogging to document what works in building these niche websites.
Shortly after starting my blog, my niche website business grew to the point where I was making enough money to quit my job. I continue to blog about business ideas, niche websites, SEO, and more on NichePursuits.com.
2.) What is the main focus of your blog and why did you choose this niche?
My main focus is on niche business ideas. Although it started with me building niche sites; I really tried to widen the blog’s focus to niche businesses in general.
The reason for expanding the focus is really to reflect what I’ve done in my real life / business. I still build and blog about niche websites, but have a few other business activities as well. Hence, I try to draw tips, advice and lessons from these companies.
3.) How are you currently monetizing your blog traffic?
I have a few affiliate links but that is a very small part of my overall business. My focus is on building a brand and a community.
I also have a related business that naturally suits my blog audience. I am selling the Long Tail Pro keyword research tool. Though indirect, selling Long Tail Pro is the way I monetize my blog.
4.) What do you know now that you wish you knew when you started blogging?
That is a lot of work! I knew when I started my blog that it was a huge commitment and it really is. If you want to create something of value, you really need to expend the time and energy making your web property great.
5.) Which three blogs do you visit almost every day?
SearchEngineLand.com, TechCrunch.com, and CNN.com.
6.) Can you give us three recommended tools / services that you use for your blogging? (Search tools, keywords, content, social)
Of course, I recommend Long Tail Pro. It really is a great keyword research tool. Google Analytics is also important (or an analytics tool). And finally, an email opt-in provider. I recommend either Aweber or Infusionsoft.
7.) What advice would you have for someone just starting their first blog?
Try to be different! If you don’t have a unique angle for your blog at all, it will likely get lost in the crowd.
8.) What is the best advice or tip you have come across since starting blogging?
Probably the previous answer I gave. Be different and unique; don’t try to copy others.
9.) If you only had $ 100 to start a new blog, how would you use it?
Logo design and theme most likely.
10.) How can readers of the blog get in touch with you?
You can find my blog at NichePursuits.com. I’m on Facebook and Twitter too.
